Question: How is the defrost ducting controlled?

No matter which button is depressed, no air seems to flow out the defrost vent on the front windshield.

I'm not a mechanic or auto expert, but you might find service estimates at Driverside (at Service your Loyale, Discover What is Fair to Pay, locate service type, and then view report).

Some good resources for parts are:
http://www2.partstrain.com
or autoelf.com

You may have a blockage, or a dirty cabin air filter behind the glove box.
My 2004 Forester has excellent defrost action, and lots of heat, but after I installed a cabin air filter it had less force.

The question was asked a while ago, but if you still need to fix it: all buttons on Loyales are operated by vacuum. Check your engine for vacuum leaks. One of the hoses will bring you to a vacuum motor (white cyllinder) located by the fire wall on the passenger side. It may be cracked. Or check the left side of the console (to the right of the driver's right knee under dash) for a loose hose. There is a white plastic connector there.

Good luck,
Sam

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
